short horror stories

Creating an aura of fear around a story in the underlining element in horror writing. It is not so easy to weave a tale that is to create fear. But then, nonetheless, there have been some successful writers in the genre of short horror stories. They have written such tales that would not only scare young ones out of their wits, but also adults. And then their stories have been converted into successful screenplays and been made into money churning films.

The germ of a horror story has to begin from the word 'fear'. This, in fact, is an objective for the writer - to create fear in the reader. This does not mean sowing seeds for a phobia build up, but a fear around the elements of the story. The writer has to be dept in character sketching and building mystery and an eerie feel around the plot.

Most importantly, though it maybe a work of fiction, it should have undertones of reality. The reader should feel as though they are in the same room, at the same time as the protagonist. The fear instilled in the protagonist should be instilled, or at least felt by the reader.

Spinning a yarn of horror is a craft by itself. It is a domain into which many writers to intend to tread, but only few can leave behind permanent footsteps. While the tale maybe something that one does not experience in their day to day life, yet it is up to the author to fill in the make-belief elements. This is what makes for a successful short horror story.
